Dr. Maria Chuy is a researcher at the Institute for Knowledge Innovation and Technology, OISE/University of Toronto, where she is currently working with Marlene Scardamalia and Carl Bereiter – the inventors of CSILE (Computer Supported Intentional Learning Environments). Maria’s interests are quite broad and relate to any process, system, activity or learning environment that enable new knowledge and new understanding to emerge. These include: memory systems (i.e., long-term memory, working memory), high and low-level cognitive processes that are involved in diverse forms of literacy (i.e., reading, writing, scientific literacy), meta-cognition, knowledge-building pedagogies, knowledge-creating communities and computer-supported learning environments for classroom and real-world applications (i.e. Knowledge Forum). Overall, Dr. Chuy is studying knowledge processes and designing knowledge-building environments that would help students to prepare for the Knowledge Age and become more skilled in a wide range of disciplines, from science to history.

Starting with her master’s research on scientific reasoning at the University of Yaroslavl (Russia), Maria continued with doctoral dissertation on knowledge interference during written composition at the University of Poitiers (France), where she also worked as an instructor and lecturer in the department of psychology. After receiving her Ph.D. degree in cognitive psychology, Maria broadened her research into a wider interest of knowledge processes in education field at the University of Toronto (Canada), as a postdoctoral fellow. Being part of the IKIT, Dr. Maria Chuy has served a co-chair, and member of program and reviewing committees for the following educational conferences: Knowledge Building Summer Institutes in 2008 and 2010, Toronto Canada, and Association for Teacher Education in Europe Conference (ATEE), Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Currently, she is coordinating research for a number of projects at OISE/University of Toronto that explore conditions and means enabling schools to operate as knowledge-creating communities.
