Call for Tomorrow's Innovators Sessions

Knowledge building, as an educational approach, represents an attempt to refashion education in a fundamental way. We invite knowledge building teachers to help co-design the curriculum for a four-day design experiment aimed at the creation of a knowledge building community—a community finely tuned to the social, cultural, cognitive, technological, and evaluation dynamics of civilization-wide efforts to advance knowledge frontiers. We will determine how much progress can be made in four days in initiating students into a knowledge building community. We will also discuss underlying design principles for a broad range of education and out-of-school contexts. Those new to knowledge building should gain a clear idea of how to begin their own knowledge-building journey.

Please let us know by email, by May 15, if you are interested the following:

1. Design Experiment

Co-design a four-day design experiment (May 15-July 30, 2006). Join us in a professional development experience. In advance of the Summer Institute we will meet online in the Knowledge Society Network database to co-design the four-day sessions to be conducted at the Summer Institute.

Conduct “Analysis, Reflection, Tour” (ART) sessions. (August 8-11, 2006). Over the four days of the Summer Institute teachers will work with students at mid-upper elementary school levels, initiating them into a knowledge building community. This work can be observed by Summer Institute participants, and there will be follow-up sessions to provide time for discussion with students. We will also schedule time to (a) design subsequent sessions, (b) discuss the transferability of procedures to other contexts, and (c) engage in hands-on work with Knowledge Forum and accompanying assessment tools used to monitor and continually improve knowledge building practices.

2. Interactive Sessions

We welcome proposals for interactive sessions with students, separate from the design experiment elaborated above. Send your ideas to us by May 15. We will be happy to work with you to plan interactive sessions with students.

Submit your proposals here: http://openconf.ikit.org/author/submit.php
